Z-Axis Lead Screw Resolution Calculator
Most i3-style printers use a TR8×8 or TR8×2 screw on Z. This tool turns step angle, lead and microstepping into steps/mm and the theoretical millimetres per pulse.

Results
- Pulses per revolution
- 3,200
- Steps per millimetre
- 400.0000steps/mm
- mm per microstep
- 0.00250mm
The M92 Z value if firmware uses mm.
Calculation method
Steps per revolution = (360 / step_angle_deg) × microstepping. Steps per millimetre = steps per revolution / lead. Linear resolution is the reciprocal. A 1.8° motor at 16× on TR8×8 is 3200 pulses/rev and 400 steps/mm (0.0025 mm/pulse). Lead is millimetres of travel per screw revolution (pitch × number of starts).
Exact formula
full_steps_per_rev = 360 / step_angle. steps_per_rev = full_steps × microstep. steps_per_mm = steps_per_rev / lead_mm. resolution = 1 / steps_per_mm. Limits: Paper resolution only. Backlash, flex and a bent screw dominate real Z error long before 16× vs 32×.

Z banding is usually mechanical
Coupler concentricity, screw straightness and a racked gantry print as regular ripples at the lead pitch, not at the microstep size.
Firmware units
Marlin M92 is steps per millimetre even if you think in inches. Do not convert this output to steps/inch unless your firmware is inch-mode, which almost none are.
Frequently asked questions
TR8×8 vs TR8×2?
TR8×8 moves 8 mm per turn (fast, typical Prusa-style). TR8×2 moves 2 mm (more steps/mm, slower homing). Firmware lead must match the metal.
Does 32× beat 16× for banding?
Rarely. Torque per microstep falls and belts/screws still have backlash. Fix mechanics first.
What about belt-driven Z?
This formula is for a lead screw. Belt-driven Z uses pulley pitch diameter and belt pitch for steps/mm, not lead × microsteps.
Why is resolution shown in inches when I toggle Imperial?
Same physical pulse size. US shops sometimes quote Z in thou; the toggle is for reading, not a different firmware unit.
