Bed Heater Power Requirement
A 220 mm plate at 60 °C does not need a 500 W heater if it is insulated, and it might if it is a sheet of aluminium in a cold garage. This is a steady-loss model: area × 12 W/m²K × ΔT × an open-or-insulated factor, then margin.

Calculation method
Plate area in square metres is (width_mm / 1000) × (depth_mm / 1000). Equivalent convection/radiation coefficient is 12 W/m²K. Temperature difference is target minus ambient (native °C; the unit toggle shows °F). An insulated or enclosed bed uses a 0.55 multiplier; an open plate uses 1.25. Steady watts = area × 12 × ΔT × that factor. Watts with margin multiply by (1 + margin/100). Flux is steady watts per square centimetre. Invalid when the target is not hotter than ambient.
Exact formula
P = area_m² × 12 × (T_target − T_ambient) × (0.55 if insulated else 1.25). Watts with margin multiply by (1 + margin/100). area_cm² = (w_mm/10)×(d_mm/10). Invalid if target ≤ ambient. Limits: 12 W/m²K estimates steady-state loss to HOLD temperature, not heat-up watts or a silicone-pad SKU. Invalid if target ≤ ambient.

Insulation that actually counts
Cork or phenolic under the plate plus an enclosure is the 0.55 case. A sheet of paper is not.
Frequently asked questions
Why is this lower than a 220 W stock pad?
Stock pads are sized to heat up quickly, not just to hold 60 °C. Use the margin output as a floor, then pick a pad that can climb in a few minutes.
PEI spring steel on top?
Extra thermal mass slows heat-up but does not change this loss model much once you are at temperature.
120 V vs 24 V pads?
Watts are watts. Voltage only changes current and the connector you must not cheap out on.
Can I run ABS at 110 °C with this?
Raise the target. Open 110 °C beds in a cold shop need more watts and usually an enclosure (switch insulated to yes if you add one).
