Nozzle Size vs Layer Limits
A 0.4 mm nozzle is not a 0.05–0.8 mm free-for-all. Layer height about a quarter to three-quarters of the orifice, line width about 0.9–1.5×, with 0.5× as a typical layer, keeps bonding and detail in the usual envelope.

Calculation method
All five outputs are linear in nozzle diameter. Minimum layer height is 25% of the nozzle, typical is 50%, maximum is 75%. Line width ranges from 90% to 150% of the nozzle. A 0.4 mm nozzle therefore suggests 0.10–0.30 mm layers (0.20 mm typical) and 0.36–0.60 mm lines. Diameter is millimetres; the unit toggle shows inches without changing the ratios.
Exact formula
min_layer = 0.25 × nozzle. max_layer = 0.75 × nozzle. typical_layer = 0.5 × nozzle. min_width = 0.9 × nozzle. max_width = 1.5 × nozzle. Limits: Shop ratios (25–75% layer, 90–150% width), not a slicer profile. High-flow, 0.1 mm nozzles and vase mode all break them.

First layer is allowed to be thicker
Many profiles use a 0.3 mm first layer on a 0.4 mm nozzle for adhesion, then drop to 0.2 mm. That first layer is the max-width / max-height neighbourhood.
Frequently asked questions
Can I print 0.08 mm on a 0.4 mm nozzle?
People do. Bonding suffers and time explodes. This tool’s minimum is the conservative 0.25× rule, not a hard jam limit.
0.6 mm nozzle for strength?
Wider lines and taller layers fill walls faster. Check the wall-thickness multiplier so shells stay integer lines.
Is typical always 50%?
It is a midpoint. 0.16–0.20 mm on 0.4 mm is the usual quality band; 0.28 mm is draft.
Does this replace volumetric flow?
No. Max layer and width still have to melt at your speed.
